Pavegen produces flooring system that generates clean energy from people's footsteps.
Pavegen is a clean-tech pioneering tech company, founded in 2009 by Laurence Kemball-Cook, producing flooring tiles that generate energy from the weight of people’s footsteps, whilst also capturing data. The electricity is generated through the weight of people’s footsteps, which causes the tile to move downwards, creating power through electro-magnetic induction.
Pavegen has scaled all over the world since its inception, installing over 100 projects on every continent, working with iconic brands such as Shell, Adidas, Coca-Cola, and Samsung and the likes of Akon, football legend Pelé and Will.I.Am to promote Laurence’s clean-tech vision. In 2015, the company successfully completed their first crowdfunding round on Crowdcube, raising a total of £2 million and accumulating over 1500 investors. In 5 years, the company has grown from strength to strength, transitioning from a 5-man team to a 40-strong group of engineers, designers and innovators. Pavegen has many exciting installations in the pipeline, taking place globally from Europe’s largest shopping mall, Westfield Stratford, to Dupont Circle in Washington DC.
In May 2016, the new V3 model was released, able to produce 200 x more power than the initial prototype, as well as providing real-time movement data analytics to allow shopping centres, train stations and other public spaces to track their user’s footsteps. Through this data capture, people’s footsteps will no longer be wasted, encouraging people to become involved in the clean-tech movement of the future. With each footstep, data will be relayed and valued – enabling the public to put a price on the energy they personally create which can be redeemed in the form of prizes, or donated to charities or developing communities.
Today Pavegen is shifting to become a permanent and commercial smart-flooring solution. The technology has evolved from a singular tile, which generates electricity from footsteps, to an entire array with three multi-functional component parts. These functionalities are called: floor, data and energy. The new interoperable Pavegen System, is poised to power the data-driven smart cities of tomorrow.
Our flooring tiles are paving the way to a greater environmental goal, aiming to inspire younger generations to engage with sustainability and understand the importance of preserving the world we live in. Pavegen has a vision to make clean-tech energy a thing of the present, as well as the future, incorporating the tiles into the up and coming smart-cities that will lead the green revolution.
