Snow plow tracking software is the category of fleet tracking applications that monitor and record winter road maintenance carried out by snow plows, salt spreaders, and related vehicles. It is used to see where plows are during a storm, confirm which roads have been plowed or treated, account for material and labor use, and answer resident questions about service. Core functions include real-time Global Positioning System (GPS) location of each vehicle, route and pass history on a map, and capture of plow position and material application rate and type from spreader controllers; many products also offer resident-facing plow maps, crew and shift records, route planning, storm reports for cost recovery, and vehicle cameras. Snow plow tracking is a winter operations subset of automatic vehicle location (AVL) and the broader fleet management market, adding winter-specific data such as plow status and material use to the vehicle location data those systems already collect. State departments of transportation (DOTs) and city and county public works and streets departments use it to manage plowing and salting during storms, and many publish live plow maps for residents. Vendors range from products built only for winter operations to general fleet telematics and geographic information system (GIS) platforms that offer a snow module or public map, and they differ in hardware requirements, spreader controller support, and public map features.
